Secret Singers perform

Welcome to the Undercover Waiters AKA Secret Singers Blog. We have been profiling our incredible team of singing waiters to learn more about their career in the entertainment industry and work as an Undercover Waiter.

This week, we sat down with Lisa Jane Kelsey (AKA LJK) to hear about her work in theatre and pantomime and the unique talents that she brings to her performances with our team of secret singers.

Hi Lisa, tell us about your journey as a professional entertainer. What did you do before joining The Undercover Waiters’ team of secret singers?

I’ve always loved entertaining. From a young age, I have sung, played instruments and danced but it was only when I started studying Performing Arts at college that I started singing professionally.

I started off performing in pubs and clubs which taught me so much about the business of entertaining. Then, in 2007, I began touring theatres as lead production vocalist with Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee, as well as a show with Jess Conrad that lead to me co-starring with Darren Day in ‘Viva Broadway’.

I performed in my first pantomime in 2010, playing Snow White then went on to play Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Wicked Fairy Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty and the princess in Jack and the Beanstalk.

Over the last 10 years I have continued to work in theatre and toured with the Grumbleweeds.

I absolutely love pantomime and performing in theatres, and I’ve been lucky enough to sing all over the world at Tui holidays resorts and onboard many cruise ships with my classical crossover show.

Most recently I’ve toured theatres in ‘Mad about the Musicals’.

What is your proudest moment in your career?

A proud moment for me was performing at the Dominion Theatre in London’s West End in ‘Songs for Victory’, a musical about the life of Vera Lynn, followed by a UK Tour. This also gave me the opportunity to perform for the troops in Belgium.

All of our singing waiters bring something unique to the table. Tell us about your unique talents.

I’m comfortable singing in any genre! I usually end up throwing in a 90s clubland track or a bit of cheesy 80s as they always get the party started and go down a treat. But I began with the company specifically to sing classical and musicals; big wow numbers! That’s my speciality!

Could you tell us about a memorable moment performing as a singing waiter?

Pretty much every wedding or event we perform at is memorable in some way. Every single one is special!

What makes working at The Undercover Waiters unique and why do you love it?

It’s a privilege to be a part of the biggest day of a couple’s life. It’s emotional at times; it’s hilarious at times, but it is always a great feeling to surprise people when you spend the whole day convincing them you are ‘staff’.

Blending in before bursting out in song is so much fun. It’s all the more special because I get to work with a great team; it’s always a pleasure to work alongside talented and lovely people.

What makes a standout secret singer?

You have to be able to be convincing; acting normally and naturally blending into the venue staff. Then you also need to have the ability to really shock people when you ‘turn it on’.

Why should people book the services of The Undercover waiters?

Because people really remember it! Your guests will talk about it for years afterwards. We have the ability to adapt song choices and our approach to suit any group of guests and create a truly memorable experience.

And most importantly, we know how to get everyone involved and make the whole experience fun for everyone, adults and children alike. We create a truly memorable experience.
